As a key member of our team, you will perform complex serological investigations on samples from a patient population that is ethnically diverse sensitized, and generally transfusion-dependent (e.g. patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, AIDS). You will also conduct complex serological investigations research projects as well as providing guidance and oversight to lower level Immunohematologists.
Responsibilities include:- Testing patient and donor samples received for consultation.
- Performing moderate to complex immunohematology techniques.
- Reporting findings to appropriate staff, providing interim reports as needed.
- Writing clear and accurate reports under a strict time limit.
- Monitoring the inventory and distribution of antigen-negative donor blood.
- Entering and maintaining data and records in computerized systems and in handwritten format, and generating reports from the data.
- Performing quality control and proficiency testing.
Requirements include: - Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred)
- Ability to meet NYS Department of Education Licensing requirements for Clinical Lab Technologists
- MT (ASCP) SBB or equivalent education and Certification satisfactory to the Lab Director
- 5+ years’ experience in transfusion service, including at least 2 years’ experience in immunohematology problem solving
- Ability to work independently and without direct supervision
- Comprehensive knowledge of the ABO, Rh, MNS, Kell, Duffy, Kidd blood group systems
- Awareness of the over 350 antigens of other 23 blood group systems and specific terminology
- Knowledge of current immnohematological and Transfusion Medicine practices
- Cognitive problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate complex information to hospital blood bank laboratorians and physicians
- PC proficiency and excellent oral/written communication and multitasking skills
