Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate of Applied Science in Clinical Laboratory Science (AASC) inclusive of a clinical practicum.
  • Possess Clinical Laboratory Technologist (CLT) / Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification or obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience in phlebotomy and specimen collection.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in a laboratory setting preferred.
  • Frozen section experience and frozen section training preferred.

Job Description:

Join our dynamic, high functioning team as a Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Technician at SSM Health - St. Mary's Hospital in Janesville, WI.

We have positions available on a part-time, full-time and PRN committment basis.

Role Purpose:
Under the direction of the Director - Laboratory Services performs routine and special technical laboratory analyses, operates and maintains instruments according to established laboratory procedures and protocols, with a maximal degree of effectiveness to provide accurate and timely test results. Performs laboratory tests in all areas - Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology and Microbiology utilizing chemicals and instrumentation to analyze blood and body fluids. Performs blood collection from patients of all ages using age appropriate techniques. Prepares frozen sections when needed. Exercises independent judgment in recognizing and solving test related problems. Authorized by the Director - Laboratory Services to perform technical job duties, limited supervisory and technical oversight duties in our high complexity laboratory as specified Section 493.1495 (Testing Personnel Responsibilities) and Section 493.1463 (General Supervisor Responsibilities) - CLIA '88.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Technical Functions: Performs routine and stat analysis as assigned to provide accurate and timely results in a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation. May perform special analyses as assigned. Performs specimen processing duties.Performs frozen section process as assigned.   
  • Participates in established quality control program and follows through appropriately if problem is identified.   
  • Follows written policies and procedures for use and maintenance of lab equipment and supplies, keeping current on changes.   
  • Collects and uses data and clinical information to make informed decisions. e. Assists in bench instruction/teaching or orientation of routine and special procedures as assigned.   
  • Draws blood from adult, pediatric and/or infant patients using proper identification and collection techniques. Perform frozen sections when needed. Demonstrates adequate knowledge of all aspects of the job.   
  • Maintains communication with staff and follow-up with Supervisor appropriately as section needs indicate. Communicates pertinent information and works collaboratively with all internal and external customers. Communicates with customers (both in and out of the laboratory setting), staff and management in a courteous manner to create a positive image of helpfulness and cooperation   
  • Follows through with customer concerns and/or requests from customers related to Laboratory section assigned. Competency: Independently completes Laboratory and house-wide competencies by required completion dates   
  • Problem Solving: Recognizes problem exists, initiates follow through and resolves problems with appropriate level of direction or assistance.   
  • Teamwork and Flexibility: Works effectively as a team member, contributing to the overall efficiency and harmonious working relationships of the section/shift and department. Adapts to change which includes but is not limited to procedures, workflow, equipment and schedules to meet the clinical laboratory needs requested by customers. Teaching: Uses theoretical and technical knowledge to correctly orient new employees or instruct students in basic techniques, procedures and instrument operation by demonstration as assigned.   
  • Process Improvement and CQI+: Completes/files occurrence reports and participates in the Laboratory Quality Improvement Program to continuously improve the overall quality of laboratory services. Communicate pertinent information to management and technical staff.   
  • Teaching: Uses theoretical and technical knowledge to correctly orient new employees or instruct students in basic techniques, procedures and instrument operation by demonstration as assigned. May have responsibilities for MLT student program coordination and evaluation. Continuing Education: Maintains skills and knowledge at the competency level required for the position and for the maintenance of certification. Performs other duties as assigned.
