Medical Technologist Requirements

Licenses/Certifications/Registration
  • Required Credential(s) - One or more of the following:
    • Medical Technologist (ASCP) credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) obtained within 18 months (1 1/2 years) of hire date or job transfer date. Any issuing authority accepted. Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologist certification by CSLT/CLMLS is also acceptable.
    • Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) obtained within 18 months (1 1/2 years) of hire date or job transfer date. Any issuing authority accepted. Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologist certification by CSLT/CLMLS is also acceptable.
    • Medical Tech credentialed from the American Medical Technologist (AMT) obtained within 18 months (1 1/2 years) of hired date or job transfer date. Any issuing authority accepted. Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologist certification by CSLT/CLMLS is also acceptable.

Education

  • Diploma
    • Bachelor's degree or post-secondary Canadian diploma or post-secondary Canadian certificate with 3 years of experience required.

  • Preferred Credential(s):
    • Certified Medical Laboratory Tech credentialed from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).

Education

  • Associate Degree
    • Associates Degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited school preferred.

Medical Technologist Responsibilities

  • Performs, validates, interprets, documents and reports laboratory test results. May collect and process specimens.
  • Conducts quality control and quality assurance testing.
  • Performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Executes and evaluates quality control and quality assurance procedures. Documents and reports as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Understands and participates in all aspects of clinical laboratory testing; pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical. Anticipates and maintains required supplies for uninterrupted testing.
  • Assists with data collection or special projects as assigned.
  • Assists in documentation, evaluation and submission of all required laboratory, departmental and staff statistics/reports.
  • Assists in training and mentoring MLTs, new associates and students.

Lab Technician Responsibilities

  • Operate instruments within the scope of training, utilizing established protocols and quality control checks. Recognize equipment malfunctions and notify appropriate supervisory personnel when they occur.
  • Perform tests, procedures and quality control as ordered following outlines in procedure manuals. Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and take appropriate action according to predetermined protocols. Document corrective action.
  • Communicate information such as test results, normal ranges and specimen requirements to authorized sources. Recognize abnormal results and refer them to designated supervisory personnel. 
  • Operate hospital and laboratory computer system.
  • Process work to reference laboratories.
